Abstract:
The broad range of Raman-based spectral imaging for biomedical analytics
Raman based imaging has emerged in the last years as extremely powerful tool for bioanalytical and biomedical applications because the method is labelfree, non-invasive and provides high molecular selectivity. Raman based spectral imaging methods can be used to study biomolecules (e.g. DNA), single biological cells, body liquids or tissue sections. The principle is that Raman spectra contain information on molecular vibrations that provide a highly specific fingerprint of the molecular structure and biochemical composition of cells, tissues etc. Here we will present challenges to be met in connection with the application of Raman imaging for life sciences and biomedicine. Overall we will highlight modern trends in Raman microspectroscopy/imaging spanning a multitude of different approaches from e.g. UV resonance Raman, SERS, TERS towards nonlinear Raman microscopy (CARS) for bioanalytical and biomedical applications like e.g. rapid pathogen identification, sensitive drug monitoring or clinical tissue diagnostics.
Bio
Jürgen Popp studied chemistry at the universities of Erlangen and Würzburg, Germany. After his PhD in Chemistry he joined Yale University for postdoctoral work. He subsequently returned to Würzburg University where he finished his habilitation in 2002.
Since 2002 he holds a chair for Physical Chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena. Since 2006 he is also the scientific director of the Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena. His research interests are mainly concerned with biophotonics. In particular his expertise is in the field of Raman spectroscopy and in the development of innovative Raman techniques should be emphasized. The scientific results of J. Popp were published in more than 250 scientific articles in premier peer-reviewed journals.
Jürgen Popp coordinates the European Network of Excellence “Photonics4Life” and is Editor-in-Chief of “Journal of Biophotonics”. Since 2009 he is Fellow of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.
